PHYSIOTHERAPY & THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE IN NEW MALDEN

Quick Summary

A sprained knee needs the right level of protection and a gradual return to movement. First establish which ligament is affected and how stable the joint is. Our physiotherapists in New Malden can assess your symptoms and help you choose appropriate next steps for your goals.

Understanding Knee Ligament Sprain

Anterior knee diagram labelling the ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL as the four major knee stabilising ligaments.

Ligaments connect bones and help control knee stability. A sprain can be a mild stretch, a partial tear or a complete tear. The ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL have different roles, so a generic knee-sprain label should not lead to the same rehabilitation for everyone.

Assessment at J&J Therapy

We review the mechanism, swelling and any emergency care, then assess safe movement and stability. Some injuries require imaging, a brace or orthopaedic input. We explain what can be started now and which activities should wait until the diagnosis is clearer.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?

  • Pain and swelling after a twist, fall or direct impact.
  • Tenderness along one side or deeper inside the knee.
  • Difficulty turning, bearing weight or trusting the joint.

An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.

Why symptoms may develop

Sudden direction changes, awkward landings and contact injuries can overload a ligament. Several structures may be injured at once. Rapid swelling, repeated giving way or a high-energy injury increases the need for careful medical assessment.

Treatment and rehabilitation options

Hands-On Manual Therapy

After the injury has been assessed, gentle treatment may support comfortable movement and surrounding muscle symptoms. Techniques protect the affected ligament. Early aggressive stretching or deep massage over an acutely swollen knee is avoided. We explain the purpose and check your comfort and response throughout treatment.

Is Shockwave Suitable?

Shockwave is not a standard treatment for an acute knee ligament sprain. It does not replace appropriate protection, a brace when indicated or progressive rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist can explain the more suitable options and how their effect will be reviewed during your ongoing rehabilitation.

Targeted Exercise Programme

The programme rebuilds range of movement, thigh strength, balance and control. Later stages prepare for stairs, lifting, running or changes of direction. More severe injuries and surgical repairs follow specific restrictions and need longer rehabilitation. Your home plan is adapted as your function and confidence improve.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:

  • Seek urgent GP or NHS 111 advice if you cannot move the knee, bear weight, or straighten a knee that is locked.
  • A hot swollen knee with fever or feeling unwell needs urgent medical assessment.
  • Go to A&E for a deformed leg after injury or a foot that becomes cold, pale or numb.

Your questions answered

Is a sprain less serious than a tear?

A sprain includes a spectrum up to a complete ligament tear. The word alone does not tell you the severity or recovery time.

When can I return to sport?

When the injury is appropriately managed and you have recovered sufficient movement, strength, control and confidence. Pain settling is only one part of readiness.

Which appointment should I book?

Start with a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment for new, persistent or recurring symptoms. We can assess the problem and agree a plan linked to your daily activities. If you have already had medical care or surgery, bring the relevant instructions.
