PHYSIOTHERAPY & THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE IN NEW MALDEN

Quick Summary

Waking with your head held to one side can be alarming. Acute wry neck often settles with time and gentle movement, but not every twisted or stiff neck has the same cause. Our physiotherapists check the history and warning signs before offering suitable advice, hands-on care or an onward referral.

What is Wry Neck / Acute Torticollis?

Acute torticollis anatomy highlighting the sternocleidomastoid and explaining how neck muscle spasm can hold the head tilted.

Acute torticollis describes a painful head tilt or turn associated with neck muscle spasm. It can develop overnight or after a minor movement. The sensation of being “locked” does not prove that a bone or joint is out of position. Persistent or repeated involuntary neck turning may represent another condition and needs medical assessment.

Your assessment at J&J Therapy looks at how symptoms affect your day, relevant health history, movement and strength. We explain the findings, agree priorities with you and advise when medical review or imaging would change your care.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?

  • Sudden one-sided neck pain and muscle tightness.
  • Head held tilted or turned because movement is uncomfortable.
  • Difficulty looking over the shoulder or finding a comfortable sleeping position.

An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.

Why can it develop?

A specific trigger is not always found. Minor irritation of neck tissues and protective muscle spasm may contribute. Injury, infection, medication reactions and other causes must be considered when the presentation is unusual or accompanied by other symptoms.

Your treatment plan at J&J Therapy

Hands-On Manual Therapy

Gentle hands-on techniques may be used to ease discomfort if your assessment supports a simple muscular episode. We do not force the neck straight or claim to unlock a displaced joint.

Is Shockwave Suitable?

Shockwave is not a routine treatment for acute torticollis. The initial priorities are checking the cause, symptom relief and tolerable movement.

Targeted Exercise Programme

Small comfortable movements are introduced as symptoms allow, followed by a return to normal activities. We can discuss pillows and work tasks; avoid driving until you can turn and respond safely.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:

  • Seek urgent medical advice for a stiff neck with fever, severe headache, rash or feeling very unwell. Call 999 if meningitis or a neurological emergency is suspected.
  • Get urgent assessment after significant injury or with weakness, numbness, new walking difficulty or trouble swallowing or breathing.
  • Contact a GP promptly if the head position persists, episodes keep recurring, symptoms worsen, or the problem started after a new medicine.

Your questions answered

How quickly should it settle?

Many uncomplicated episodes improve over several days, but the course varies. Persistent, severe or worsening symptoms warrant review rather than repeated forceful stretching.

Should someone crack my neck to release it?

No forceful self-treatment is needed. Assessment comes first, particularly after injury or if you feel unwell. Gentle movement and appropriately selected care are safer starting points.

Which appointment should I book?

Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment to understand this problem and plan your rehabilitation. Soft Tissue Therapy may be considered for associated muscle tension when appropriate; it does not replace assessment of an injury, tendon problem or joint restriction.
