PHYSIOTHERAPY & THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE IN NEW MALDEN

Quick Summary

“Text neck” or “tech neck” is a popular name for neck discomfort noticed during screen use. Looking down at a phone does not, by itself, prove that your neck is damaged. We help you explore what makes symptoms better or worse and build a workable routine for study, work and leisure.

What is Text Neck / Tech Neck?

Tech neck muscle anatomy showing the trapezius, splenius, levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid and scalenes, with a note that pain does not prove muscle shortening.

Text neck is not a distinct structural diagnosis. Research has not established that the neck angle used for texting causes pain; a recent longitudinal study found no increased risk from neck flexion during phone use. Duration, activity, sleep and other individual factors may still be relevant to your experience. Your symptoms deserve assessment without blaming your posture.

Your assessment at J&J Therapy looks at how symptoms affect your day, relevant health history, movement and strength. We explain the findings, agree priorities with you and advise when medical review or imaging would change your care.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?

  • Neck or shoulder aching during or after screen tasks.
  • Stiffness after staying in one position for a long time.
  • Fatigue or reduced tolerance for studying, commuting or working at a computer.

An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.

Why can it develop?

Long uninterrupted tasks and an increase in screen-based work can make existing discomfort more noticeable. We explore comfort, movement variety, exercise and sleep rather than assigning a “bad” posture from a photograph. Persistent arm symptoms or headaches may point to a different problem.

Your treatment plan at J&J Therapy

Hands-On Manual Therapy

Soft tissue therapy or gentle mobilisation may support short-term comfort. Hands-on treatment is combined with a plan you can use at your desk and at home; it does not “realign” a damaged neck.

Is Shockwave Suitable?

Shockwave is not routinely indicated for screen-related neck discomfort. We prioritise relevant assessment, practical activity changes and gradual conditioning.

Targeted Exercise Programme

We can trial screen height, arm support and regular position changes, then select neck and shoulder exercises matched to your tolerance. You do not need to keep your head in one “correct” position all day.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:

  • Seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111 or an urgent GP appointment for new or increasing arm weakness, numbness, unsteady walking or clumsy hands.
  • Attend A&E for new bladder or bowel control problems with neck or limb symptoms, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms. Call 999 for a sudden severe headache with weakness, speech or vision changes.
  • Arrange medical assessment after a significant injury, or for fever, unexplained weight loss or steadily worsening pain.

Your questions answered

Have I permanently damaged my neck by using my phone?

Pain during phone use does not establish permanent damage. Neck position alone is a poor explanation. We assess your symptoms and function and discuss any findings that need further investigation.

Must I stop using screens?

Usually the goal is to make screen tasks manageable. Shorter blocks, changes of position and a gradual increase in tolerance may be more practical than avoiding devices completely.

Which appointment should I book?

For familiar muscular tightness without a recent injury or nerve symptoms, Soft Tissue Therapy may be a suitable starting point. Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment for persistent pain, recurring flare-ups, headaches or restricted movement. Your assessment guides any combination of hands-on care and exercise.
