PHYSIOTHERAPY & THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE IN NEW MALDEN

Quick Summary

If your neck aches during desk work, driving or other sustained tasks, changing how long and how often you hold a position may help. “Postural neck pain” describes this activity pattern, not a damaged or incorrectly aligned spine. We build a practical plan around the positions and activities you need each day.

What is Postural Neck Pain?

Postural neck pain anatomy showing deep neck extensors and suboccipital muscles that support head position.

There is no single posture that is right for everyone all day. Some positions may be uncomfortable for you at a particular time, while others feel easier. We assess your neck and shoulder function and explore workload, recovery and activity. The goal is comfortable movement variety and capacity rather than constant posture monitoring.

Your assessment at J&J Therapy looks at how symptoms affect your day, relevant health history, movement and strength. We explain the findings, agree priorities with you and advise when medical review or imaging would change your care.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?

  • Aching or stiffness during longer seated or standing tasks.
  • Symptoms easing or changing when you move or change position.
  • Neck or shoulder fatigue towards the end of a workday.

An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.

Why can it develop?

Long uninterrupted tasks, a recent increase in work and limited recovery may contribute. Sleep, general activity and stress can also influence pain. Posture studies do not justify claims that looking down inevitably causes damage; advice should be individual and avoid unnecessary fear of movement.

Your treatment plan at J&J Therapy

Hands-On Manual Therapy

Hands-on care may support comfort where muscle tenderness or joint stiffness is present. We combine it with a plan for the activities that bring symptoms on, rather than offer repeated “realignment”.

Is Shockwave Suitable?

Shockwave is not routinely indicated for posture-related neck symptoms. Assessment and a manageable activity programme are more relevant starting points.

Targeted Exercise Programme

We trial practical adjustments such as task changes, arm support and movement breaks, alongside progressive neck and shoulder exercises. Your response determines what is useful, rather than a rigid ergonomic rule.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:

  • Seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111 or an urgent GP appointment for new or increasing arm weakness, numbness, unsteady walking or clumsy hands.
  • Attend A&E for new bladder or bowel control problems with neck or limb symptoms, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms. Call 999 for a sudden severe headache with weakness, speech or vision changes.
  • Arrange medical assessment after a significant injury, or for fever, unexplained weight loss or steadily worsening pain.

Your questions answered

Do I need an expensive chair?

Not necessarily. Trial simple changes first: comfort, support and opportunities to vary position matter. We can help identify adjustments that are realistic for your existing workspace.

Should I keep my shoulders back all day?

No. Holding one position continuously can become tiring. Aim for a range of comfortable positions and gradually improve your ability to manage the tasks you need.

Which appointment should I book?

For familiar muscular tightness without a recent injury or nerve symptoms, Soft Tissue Therapy may be a suitable starting point. Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment for persistent pain, recurring flare-ups, headaches or restricted movement. Your assessment guides any combination of hands-on care and exercise.
