PHYSIOTHERAPY & THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE IN NEW MALDEN

Quick Summary

Neck pain can make driving, working at a screen or getting comfortable at night difficult. Mechanical or non-specific neck pain usually means pain influenced by movement and activity, without a clear serious cause. Our New Malden physiotherapists help you understand your symptoms and build a practical plan combining advice, suitable hands-on care and exercise.

What is Mechanical Neck Pain?

Mechanical neck pain anatomy showing trapezius, splenius and rhomboid muscles with an explanation that no single tissue lesion has been established.

Non-specific neck pain is a clinical description, not a sign that your pain is imaginary. Muscles, joints and other sensitive tissues can contribute, and it is often impossible or unnecessary to identify a single structure. Pain severity does not reliably show how much tissue damage there is. We also consider headaches, shoulder symptoms and possible nerve involvement.

Your assessment at J&J Therapy looks at how symptoms affect your day, relevant health history, movement and strength. We explain the findings, agree priorities with you and advise when medical review or imaging would change your care.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?

  • Aching around the neck, shoulders or upper back.
  • Stiffness when looking over your shoulder or after staying in one position.
  • Symptoms that vary with activity, sleep or a busy day.

An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.

Why can it develop?

A change in activity, unfamiliar exercise, long periods in one position or disrupted sleep can accompany a flare-up. Stress and worry can influence symptoms too. There is no single perfect posture that everyone must maintain; comfortable movement options and gradual conditioning are more useful goals.

Your treatment plan at J&J Therapy

Hands-On Manual Therapy

Hands-on muscle techniques or joint mobilisation may make movement more comfortable. We use your response to guide treatment and combine it with advice and active rehabilitation rather than repeated passive treatment alone.

Is Shockwave Suitable?

Shockwave is not a routine treatment for non-specific neck pain. Your plan will focus on assessment, comfortable movement, strength and symptom management.

Targeted Exercise Programme

We select manageable neck and upper-back movements and strengthening exercises, then progress them towards your work and leisure needs. A short home routine helps you practise between visits.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:

  • Seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111 or an urgent GP appointment for new or increasing arm weakness, numbness, unsteady walking or clumsy hands.
  • Attend A&E for new bladder or bowel control problems with neck or limb symptoms, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms. Call 999 for a sudden severe headache with weakness, speech or vision changes.
  • Arrange medical assessment after a significant injury, or for fever, unexplained weight loss or steadily worsening pain.

Your questions answered

Do I need a scan?

Most uncomplicated neck pain can be assessed without a scan. Imaging is considered when the history or examination suggests a different problem or when its result would change management.

Should I rest until the pain goes?

Usually, shorter periods of activity and gentle movement are more helpful than prolonged rest. We can help you adjust demanding tasks while keeping a comfortable level of activity.

Which appointment should I book?

For familiar muscular tightness without a recent injury or nerve symptoms, Soft Tissue Therapy may be a suitable starting point. Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment for persistent pain, recurring flare-ups, headaches or restricted movement. Your assessment guides any combination of hands-on care and exercise.
