Quick Summary
Stiffness or pain when reaching, lifting or straightening the elbow can affect ordinary tasks. We assess your movement and symptoms, then develop an exercise and activity plan aimed at keeping your arm as useful and comfortable as possible.
Understanding Elbow Osteoarthritis

Elbow osteoarthritis involves joint changes that may restrict bending, straightening or forearm rotation. Previous injury can contribute. Painful catching or locking, new swelling and tingling in the little finger need consideration rather than being dismissed as normal wear.
How we assess your symptoms
We assess the movement available for your daily activities and check grip and nerve symptoms where relevant. We discuss task changes and exercise, and whether locking, significant loss of function or persistent pain needs specialist review.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?
- Pain or stiffness near the end of bending or straightening.
- Difficulty reaching the mouth or fully extending the arm.
- Occasional catching, swelling or reduced lifting tolerance.
An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.
What may contribute?
Joint loading over time, previous fractures or other injuries may be relevant. Symptoms and scan changes do not always match. An unusually hot, swollen joint or prolonged morning stiffness may indicate another condition and warrants medical review.
A treatment plan built around you
Hands-On Manual Therapy
Careful hands-on treatment may be considered for comfort and surrounding muscle stiffness. It cannot remove bony spurs or regrow cartilage, and we avoid forceful attempts to gain a blocked range.
Is Shockwave Suitable?
Shockwave is not routinely recommended for elbow osteoarthritis. Your assessment will guide appropriate rehabilitation, symptom management and whether medical or specialist review is needed. We will explain why each proposed treatment fits your symptoms before you decide whether to proceed.
Targeted Exercise Programme
A tailored programme maintains useful movement and builds arm strength within tolerable ranges. We work towards tasks such as carrying, reaching and dressing, and adapt exercise during flares rather than stopping activity indefinitely.
When to Seek Urgent Medical Help
While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:
- Go to A&E immediately after an injury if a joint is deformed or the hand or finger is cold, pale or blue, or has severe loss of sensation. For other severe swelling or inability to use the arm, seek urgent assessment through NHS 111.
- A hot, red, rapidly swollen joint with fever needs urgent medical assessment. Arrange prompt review for persistent numbness, increasing weakness or loss of dexterity.
Your questions answered
Can exercise make the joint useful even if it remains stiff?
It may help strength and function within the movement available. The goal is an arm that works better for you, not necessarily a perfectly straight elbow.
When should I see a specialist?
Persistent locking, substantial restriction, nerve symptoms or pain that remains troublesome despite appropriate care may justify GP or specialist review. Treatment options depend on your goals and examination.
Which appointment should I book?
Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment for new, persistent or uncertain symptoms. We will assess what is limiting you, explain the options and agree the next steps. If you already have a diagnosis, bring any relevant scan report or specialist advice.
