Quick Summary
Cervical spondylosis is a common description for age-related changes in the neck. Many people have these changes without pain. If stiffness or aching is limiting your day, our New Malden physiotherapists assess how your neck is functioning and discuss a plan to support comfortable movement and daily activity.
What is Cervical Spondylosis?

Changes may affect the neck discs, joints and nearby bone. A scan finding does not automatically explain your symptoms or mean that your neck is unsafe to move. Spondylosis is different from spinal cord dysfunction. Arm pain or altered sensation can occur when a nerve is irritated and needs its own assessment.
Your assessment at J&J Therapy looks at how symptoms affect your day, relevant health history, movement and strength. We explain the findings, agree priorities with you and advise when medical review or imaging would change your care.
Do You Experience These Symptoms?
- Intermittent neck or shoulder stiffness and aching.
- Reduced comfort turning the head or looking up.
- Sometimes a headache starting near the neck; arm weakness or balance changes need medical attention.
An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.
Your treatment plan at J&J Therapy
Hands-On Manual Therapy
Gentle mobilisation or soft tissue treatment may help associated stiffness or muscle discomfort when suitable. We screen for nerve or spinal cord symptoms and adapt hands-on care to your health and examination.
Is Shockwave Suitable?
Shockwave does not remove neck arthritis or widen the spinal canal. It is not included as a routine treatment for cervical spondylosis.
Targeted Exercise Programme
An individual plan can develop comfortable neck movement, neck and shoulder strength and general activity. We choose a starting level you can maintain and adjust it if symptoms change.
When to Seek Urgent Medical Help
While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:
- Seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111 or an urgent GP appointment for new or increasing arm weakness, numbness, unsteady walking or clumsy hands.
- Attend A&E for new bladder or bowel control problems with neck or limb symptoms, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms. Call 999 for a sudden severe headache with weakness, speech or vision changes.
- Arrange medical assessment after a significant injury, or for fever, unexplained weight loss or steadily worsening pain.
Your questions answered
Does a scan showing wear and tear mean my neck will get worse?
No. Age-related changes are common, including in people without symptoms. Your function, examination and how symptoms change over time matter more than the wording of a scan alone.
Can physiotherapy cure arthritis?
Physiotherapy does not reverse structural changes. It can help you manage pain, remain active and work towards practical goals. New nerve symptoms or deteriorating function may require medical review.
Which appointment should I book?
Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment to understand this problem and plan your rehabilitation. Soft Tissue Therapy may be considered for associated muscle tension when appropriate; it does not replace assessment of an injury, tendon problem or joint restriction.
