PHYSIOTHERAPY & THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE IN NEW MALDEN

Quick Summary

A painful back spasm or suspected strain can make ordinary movement feel difficult. We assess how it started and any associated symptoms, then help you find a comfortable starting point for movement, suitable hands-on care and gradual recovery.

Understanding Back Muscle Spasm / Strain

Back muscle anatomy and a magnified schematic comparing continuous muscle fibres with a possible strain.

A strain is an injury involving muscle or tendon. A spasm is an involuntary tightening that can accompany several types of back pain. Feeling a tight area does not prove that a muscle has torn or that a spinal joint is out of place.

How we assess your symptoms

We discuss the event, work or exercise demands and the effect on walking and daily tasks. We examine movement and screen for reasons to seek medical care. An acute severe injury or a changing symptom pattern may require reassessment before treatment.

Do You Experience These Symptoms?

  • Localised back pain or tenderness after activity.
  • Muscles that feel tight, cramp or guard movement.
  • Difficulty bending, turning or lifting comfortably.

An assessment helps guide your next step, based on your symptoms, health and goals.

What may contribute?

Unfamiliar loading, a sudden movement or fatigue may contribute to a strain. Spasm may also occur with other back conditions, so leg symptoms, trauma or feeling unwell must be considered. Recovery planning depends on more than finding a tender muscle.

A treatment plan built around you

Hands-On Manual Therapy

Gentle manual or soft tissue treatment may help discomfort when appropriate. Deep work over a fresh, very painful injury is not essential. We combine any hands-on care with a plan to restore movement and activity.

Is Shockwave Suitable?

Shockwave is not routinely recommended for back muscle spasm / strain. Your assessment will guide appropriate rehabilitation, symptom management and whether medical or specialist review is needed. We will explain why each proposed treatment fits your symptoms before you decide whether to proceed.

Targeted Exercise Programme

Comfortable movement progresses to strength and the tasks that triggered difficulty. We discuss manageable loads, pacing and a return to usual routines. Exercises are adapted to the phase of recovery rather than forced through worsening pain.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

While most symptoms are not serious, urgent medical attention is required if you experience any of the following:

  • Go to A&E immediately for new numbness around your genitals or bottom, difficulty starting or controlling urine, loss of bowel control, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs. These can signal cauda equina compression. Call 999 if you need an ambulance.
  • Seek urgent medical advice for rapidly worsening leg weakness, fever or feeling unwell with back pain, or significant pain after an injury. Contact your GP about unexplained weight loss, a cancer history or persistent night pain.

Your questions answered

Should I book Soft Tissue Therapy or physiotherapy?

For a new severe episode, uncertain diagnosis or leg symptoms, choose physiotherapy first. Once muscle tension is assessed, Soft Tissue Therapy with Brigitte may support comfort alongside exercise.

Can heat help a spasm?

Some people find gentle warmth comforting. Protect your skin and avoid heat where sensation or circulation is reduced. Symptom relief should support comfortable activity, and persistent or unusual pain needs assessment.

Which appointment should I book?

Choose a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment for new, persistent or uncertain symptoms. We will assess what is limiting you, explain the options and agree the next steps. If you already have a diagnosis, bring any relevant scan report or specialist advice. For assessed muscle tension, Soft Tissue Therapy with Brigitte may complement your exercise plan. New weakness or nerve symptoms should be assessed before massage.
