Does Your Neck Ache After Work? You're Not Alone — Here's Why and How to Fix It

Office worker holding neck in pain at desk with computer screen showing forward head posture

If your neck feels stiff and sore by the time you leave the office, you already know the drill. The tightness creeps in around lunchtime, your shoulders start to feel like they're carrying bricks, and by evening, you're reaching for painkillers just to get through the night.

You're far from alone. A 2025 UK survey found that over one in five British adults experience neck, back, or shoulder pain every single day. For desk workers, those numbers are even higher — with studies showing that up to 63% of office workers report neck pain each year.

The good news? This isn't something you simply have to live with.

Does This Sound Like You?

Checklist of neck pain symptoms including stiff neck, tense shoulders, headaches and worsening pain

Take a moment to check whether any of these feel familiar:

  • Stiff neck after long hours at your desk

  • Heavy, tense shoulders by the afternoon

  • Headaches starting from the back of your head

  • Pain that gets worse throughout the workday

Warning signs of neck problems including arm tingling, upper back aches and sleep disruption

And it doesn't stop there. You might also notice:

  • Tingling or numbness down your arms

  • Aching between your shoulder blades

  • Trouble sleeping because of neck discomfort

  • Temporary relief that keeps coming back

If two or more of these apply to you, your body is sending you a clear message. It's time to take action before things get worse.

Why Does Desk Work Cause Neck Pain?

Diagram showing forward head posture causing strained muscles and reduced blood flow in neck

The problem starts with something called forward head posture. When you lean towards your screen, your head shifts forward from its natural position over your spine. For every inch your head moves forward, your neck bears an extra 10 lbs of pressure.

This puts enormous strain on your upper trapezius and levator scapulae muscles — the muscles responsible for holding your head upright. Over time, these muscles become overworked, tight, and painful.

But that's only part of the story. Tight muscles also restrict blood flow to the area, which means less oxygen reaches the tissue and waste products build up. This creates a cycle of stiffness, inflammation, and pain that worsens with each passing day.

The average office worker spends more than six hours a day in this position. That's six hours of cumulative strain on muscles that were never designed to work this hard.

The Vicious Cycle of Desk Pain

Here's what happens when neck pain goes untreated:

Poor posture at your desk → muscles tighten and shorten → pain and stiffness develop → your range of movement reduces → your body starts compensating with other muscles → this creates even more strain → and the cycle repeats.

Without professional intervention, research suggests that 50–85% of neck pain cases become chronic. What starts as mild afternoon stiffness can turn into a persistent problem that affects your sleep, your concentration, and your quality of life.

The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to break the cycle.

How Manual Therapy Releases Your Pain

Step-by-step illustration of how manual therapy releases muscle tension and restores blood flow

At J&J Therapy, we take a different approach to most physiotherapy clinics. Rather than simply prescribing exercises and sending you on your way, our HCPC-registered physiotherapists treat you directly with their hands.

Here's how hands-on manual therapy works:

Tension — When muscles are tight, they trap toxins and restrict blood flow to the affected area.

Targeted Pressure — Our skilled physiotherapists locate the precise tension points and apply focused manual techniques to release them.

Release — As the therapist works through the tissue, muscle fibres begin to relax and lengthen, relieving the built-up tightness.

Restored Circulation — Fresh blood brings oxygen to the area and removes metabolic waste, supporting the body's natural healing process.

Pain Relief — With reduced inflammation and restored mobility, you feel genuine, lasting relief — not just a temporary fix.

Clinical research confirms that combining manual therapy with therapeutic exercise is one of the most effective approaches for neck pain. Unlike exercise-only physiotherapy, hands-on treatment addresses the physical restrictions in your muscles and joints that exercises alone cannot reach.

5 Quick Stretches You Can Do at Your Desk

Whilst professional treatment is the most effective way to address persistent neck pain, these simple exercises can help manage discomfort between sessions:

1. Chin Tucks — Sit upright and gently draw your chin back, as if making a double chin. Hold for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. This corrects forward head posture.

2. Side Neck Stretch — Tilt your head slowly towards one shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch. Hold for 15 seconds each side.

3. Neck Rotations — Turn your head slowly to the left as far as comfortable, hold for 10 seconds, then repeat on the right.

4. Shoulder Rolls — Roll your shoulders forward 10 times, then backward 10 times. This relieves tension in the upper trapezius.

5. Scapular Squeeze — Pull your shoulder blades together and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times to counteract rounded shoulder posture.

Important: Take a break from your desk every hour, even if it's just for two minutes. Small, regular movement breaks make a real difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my neck pain needs professional treatment? If your pain has lasted more than two to three weeks, is getting worse, or is accompanied by arm tingling, numbness, or headaches, it's time to see a physiotherapist. Early intervention can prevent your pain from becoming chronic.

What's the difference between J&J Therapy and other physio clinics? Many physiotherapy clinics focus primarily on prescribing exercises. At J&J Therapy, our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use hands-on manual therapy to directly treat your muscles and joints, combined with exercise guidance for long-term results.

How many sessions will I need? This depends on your individual condition. Many patients notice improvement after the first session. For most desk-related neck pain, we recommend weekly sessions for four to six weeks, with progress reviewed along the way.

Do I need a GP referral? No. You can book directly with us — no referral or waiting list required. This means you can start treatment straightaway, without the NHS waiting times that can stretch to several months.

Can shockwave therapy help with neck pain? Shockwave therapy can be very effective for chronic muscle tension and stubborn trigger points in the neck and shoulder area. It promotes tissue healing and may help where other treatments have plateaued.

Is the treatment painful? Manual therapy should not be painful, though you may feel some discomfort when tight areas are being worked on. Our therapists always communicate with you throughout treatment to ensure you're comfortable.
