Common Neck Pain Symptoms

Neck pain can feel different for everyone. Some people notice stiffness and tension, while others experience sharp pain or symptoms spreading into the shoulders, arms, or head.

Do You Experience Any of These Neck Pain Symptoms?

Stiffness or pain when turning your head to one side

A dull ache between your shoulder blades that builds through the day Sharp pain shooting from your neck down into your arm or hand

Headaches that start at the base of your skull

Pins and needles or numbness in your fingers

Difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position because of neck pain

The good news is that these symptoms are treatable.

Specialist physiotherapy can help identify the cause and relieve your neck pain.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Understanding Neck Pain: Causes and What Happens

Your neck (cervical spine) supports the full weight of your head - roughly 5 kg - while allowing a wide range of movement. When the muscles, joints, discs, or nerves in this area become irritated or compressed, the result is pain, stiffness, and sometimes symptoms that travel into your shoulders, arms, or head. Neck pain is one of the most common conditions we see. It can develop gradually from poor posture and desk work, or suddenly after an injury, awkward sleeping position, or period of stress.

Common Causes

Prolonged desk work, screen use, or forward-head posture

Disc degeneration, joint wear, or nerve compression

Sudden injury such as whiplash, a fall, or sleeping awkwardly

Research supports physiotherapy including manual therapy and targeted exercise as an effective approach for managing neck pain (Blanpied et al., JOST, 2017). Individual results may vary.

These causes can lead to specific neck conditions.
Below are some of the most common ones we diagnose and treat.

Headaches that start at the back of your neck and spread to your temples or forehead?

The problem may be in your neck, not your head.

Neck stiffness, headaches, and pain that started after a car accident, fall, or sudden impact?

These symptoms can develop hours or even days later.

Sharp pain shooting down your arm, with tingling or numbness in your fingers?

A disc in your neck may be pressing on a nerve.

Constant aching between your neck and upper back from long hours at a screen?

Your posture may be putting 5x more pressure on your neck than normal.

An outstanding experience at J&J Therapy. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was calm, welcoming, and spotless. The therapist took the time to understand back problems I had, asked thoughtful questions and tailored the session perfectly.

The massage itself was exceptional with the perfect pressure, extremely skilled techniques, and a great understanding of how to relieve tension and pain. I left feeling lighter, relaxed and cared for. Excellent aftercare advice! Will be back.
